In addition to the outstanding performance of emerging pickup trucks such as Jianghuai Automobile, Jiangxi Isuzu and SAIC Datong, the export volume of domestic pickup trucks is also extremely eye-catching. In April 2017, the domestic mainstream pickup trucks exported 2,316 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 130%. Among them, Jiangling Motors, Zhongxing Automobile, Zhengzhou Nissan and other enterprises increased by three digits year-on-year, which means that domestic pickup trucks are entering the overseas market.
Since the beginning of this year, the growth rate of domestic pickup trucks has accelerated, and the rapid development momentum is remarkable. According to statistics, in the first four months of this year, the cumulative sales volume of 16 mainstream pickup truck enterprises was 130,293 units, an increase of nearly 20% year-on-year, an increase of 18.65%. By comparison, the total number of domestic pickup trucks exported was 6,629 units, a year-on-year increase of 102.3%. The increase in exports is much higher than the average increase in the domestic market. It can be seen that with the maturity of domestic automobile manufacturing technology and the rise of independent brands, the “Made in China” of the pickup truck has begun to gain international recognition, and the domestic pickup truck has taken another big step on the road of entering the international market.
At the same time as the rapid expansion of overseas markets, the corporate landscape has also undergone earth-shaking changes. In the past, the first reaction to picking up pickup trucks was often Great Wall Motor. Since its first export in 1998, Great Wall Fengjun Pickup was once the largest exporter of Chinese pickup truck brands and the largest exporter. However, with the acceleration of the export of pickup truck brands, Jiangling Motors, Zhongxing Automobile, Zhengzhou Nissan and other enterprises have actively deployed overseas markets. The situation of Great Wall Motors’ “outstanding” has been broken, and the overseas export market has shown a multi-pronged trend.
This change can be seen from the above table. In April, ZTE Automobile's 853 vehicles and 587.9% year-on-year growth rate exceeded that of Great Wall Motor, becoming the largest pickup truck brand in the month; Zhengzhou Nissan and Jiangling Motors' year-on-year growth rates reached 574.2% and 132%, respectively. The growth rate is very eye-catching; SAIC Chase, which was listed soon, will achieve export in the first month. Although the number is small, it is an extremely rare breakthrough for the domestic emerging pickup truck enterprises.
Domestic pickup trucks are favored by overseas markets for a reason. On the one hand, the quality of domestic pickup trucks has been greatly improved, the manufacturing process has gradually been in line with international standards, and the price-performance ratio is relatively durable and relatively low-cost. It is still irreplaceable in the fierce market competition. On the other hand, the rapid advancement of the “Belt and Road” strategy has promoted trade between countries along the route and brought good news to automobile exports. The continued growth of domestic pickup trucks has undoubtedly confirmed this. In addition, the established enterprises such as Jiangling Motors, Zhengzhou Nissan and Zhongxing Automobile have established a solid position in the domestic market and have acquired the comprehensive strength to enter the international market. Entering overseas markets is also in line with the development situation.
Judging from the current situation, the entry of domestic pickup trucks into the international market is the trend of the times. The improvement of independent research and development capabilities and the attention and support of national policies have provided ample room for domestic pickup trucks to enter the overseas market. It should be noted that although “Made in China” has shown a promising prospect of great potential, domestic pickups still face many problems such as technical barriers, local country policy restrictions, and immature transportation and after-sales services. Therefore, domestic pickup truck enterprises should avoid the blind overseas expansion, and should first base themselves on the domestic market, continuously speed up their independent research and development capabilities and internationalization process, and then plan the overseas market layout after having certain foundation and strength. Rational competition, step by step, can gain a foothold in the global market wave.
