INTRODUCTION A motor vehicle with a simple structure is frequently seen in the deserts of Kuwait and western Iraq. It is the business card of the US Seals Commando — a “rolling mine” desert reconnaissance vehicle.

The United States "Seal" commando used desert reconnaissance vehicles from the 1991 Gulf War. After the war, the manufacturer improved the fast assault vehicle and named it as a "Raft" fast attack vehicle. Based on the experience of use, the SEAL commando made many improvements to the "Boom" model. In 1999, Lockheed Martin developed a new type of "rolling mine" desert reconnaissance vehicle on the basis of the "squat" type.


Rolling Thunder desert reconnaissance vehicle is a kind of light high-speed motor vehicle. It led the "Seal" assault commander to "wings", which greatly enhanced the ground machine power. Its tires use automatic pressure regulating systems and special anti-knock materials. They can pass through the antitank minefields set up by the enemy and do not easily detonate mines. Therefore, they can perform a variety of tasks, including quickly hiding behind enemy depths to search for and rescue their own or friendly forces. Parachuting pilots, capturing enemy commanders or other targets with operational value, detecting changes in important targets of the enemy, seizing important enemy weapon parts or destroying enemy communication networks, and attacking enemy’s important targets. To accomplish these tasks, Rolling Thunder has excellent maneuverability. "Rolling Thunder" is made of high-strength steel pipe, with a length of 4.08 meters, a vehicle width of 2.1 meters, a vehicle height of 2.01 meters and a total weight of 1.7 tons. It has a maximum speed of 130 km/h and a maximum travel distance of 500 km. It runs in the desert of the Gulf region and has a maximum off-road speed of 110 km/h. The vehicle is equipped with a suspension device with a torsion bar and a shock absorber, which improves the riding comfort of the vehicle during off-road. “Rolling Thunder” shows good transportability. It can be transported by C-130 Hercules and CH-53 transport helicopters, or by C-130 at low altitude.


"Rolling Thunder" desert reconnaissance vehicles also have a multi-purpose feature: Mounting a reconnaissance surveillance system is a patrol reconnaissance vehicle, and loading a weapon system is a high-speed attack vehicle. It can carry a variety of weapons, together with ammunition as long as the total weight does not exceed 700 kilograms, what infantry weapons can bring. It usually carries a 40mm grenade launcher, a 12.7mm or 7.62mm vehicle-mounted machine gun, a "stinger" air defense missile, and a 30mm caliber cannon or "Tao" missile and launcher. If equipped with different weapons, three "rolling mines" can form a powerful combination of firepower combat team to complete the enemy attack mission.
